This crunch is a textbook case for not tampering in the markets.

I agree about there being some shady characters. I would like to think they would be stuck but I suspect most of them unloaded the loans they wrote and walked off with the fees.

I agree about alternative energy sources (now my neck is getting whiplash agreeing with you!) as long as it is in addition to fossil fuels. The renewable energy sources just can't carry the load now. With ample energy in hand and big bucks from a robust economy I do believe we can develop long term replacements for most fossil fuels. It will not happen in a crisis situation though.

I'm afraid I also think this steaming load will pass tomorrow. I wish I felt more optimistic.Machinisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04823033143224574421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2677457312573745371.post-68335001417474485542008-10-02T23:56:00.000-05:002008-10-02T23:56:00.000-05:00Excellent post, Mac! *getting whiplash from noddin...Excellent post, Mac! *getting whiplash from nodding in agreement with most of it*

Many people did act irresponsibly in taking out risky loans or loans they couldn't pay long term, and no, their mortgages shouldn't be saved. In fact, I'm not even sure I believe those who were preyed upon by shady lenders should have their mortgages rescued either, since they should have worn their grown-up pants when reading the contracts. But there sure were plenty of shady loans.

This bailout proposal is an obscenity. "Having taken over the housing market and the banking system, what industry is next?" - Scary thought. And why aren't private investors rushing to step in and save the day? Shouldn't the government consider this before hefting the burden of the bailout onto so many people who are struggling to make ends meet? Or worse, maybe they did consider it.

"Ease concerns about mortgage backed securities by issuing insurance, which the holders will pay for, not the tax payers." And... "They can not have the power to interfere with the regulators. It should be obvious that the people charged with oversight CAN NOT TAKE MONEY from the people they are watching." - Yep, my neck hurts from nodding some more.

"We should immediately start developing and expanding the different energy and refining resources we have, not just removing the legal blocks but passing emergency enabling legislation that will keep the usual players from blocking these projects in court or in the regulatory agencies." - I think this should apply, right now, to "alternative," sustainable energy sources, like wind, solar and hydroelectric. It would take pumping some money into research and putting these resources to use, but hey, as long as we've supposedly got more than $700 billion to toss around. ;) The point is, it would take us to energy independence while boosting the economy permanently with new jobs.

About you not helping to make these decisions... good news? Well, I think you have some great ideas here. When can you start? 'Cause unfortunately, I think the bailout is going to be rammed through the House tomorrow.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
